I’ll admit, I watched the Duggar family television shows for years.
I was not compelled by their religious Christian fundamentalism. Actually, I was turned off by it.
Having spent time in that world in the earlier parts of my life, it was interesting to note certain inconsistencies that always lurk in the background.
For instance, any conservative religious dogma will have more rules for women than men. The rules for women seem to be more of a burden to live up to… even something as simple as men being allowed to wear jeans, and women having to wear long dresses all the time.
The Duggars were raised to follow the teachings of Bill Gothard of IBLP (Institute of Basic Life Principles). I too had a run-in with IBLP early in my pastoral world. People insisted my wife and I attend a Bill Gothard seminar. We did it, but really just to get it over with and get folks to quit asking us to go.
